The Australian Notice of Intention to Marry (NOIM)

Saturday, February 22nd, 2025

Do you need to lodge a NOIM?

If you intend to marry in Australia, then yes, you must lodge a NOIM with a Marriage Celebrant at least thrity days before you marry.

There are some very limited exceptions to this ‘thirty days’ rule.

Who needs to sign the NOIM and when?

Only one party to the intended marriage is initially required to sign and submit the NOIM form.

This is useful to know if your partner is not yet with you at the time you want to lodge the NOIM.

Both parties need to sign the NOIM before the marriage takes place but the second party can – theoretically – sign the NOIM just before the marriage takes place – as long as the first party signed the NOIM at least thirty days previously.

How long is the NOIM valid for?

The NOIM is valid for a period of 18months.

If you don’t marry within the 18 months, then the NOIM will lapse and you would need to sign a new one.
